Connections and alterations (business)

Are you arranging a new connection, upgrading a connection or needing to increase power supply to your business?

We understand electricity connections can be varied and complex. You may need the assistance of an electrician to determine which connection type is best for you. Your electrician can also submit a connections application on your behalf.

Working near powerlines?

If you’re doing anything close to powerlines, don't forgot to follow these rules.

Do you need a basic or negotiated connection?

  • Basic connections

Apply for this if you require a brand new power connection, temporary supply to a building site or are upgrading or relocating your existing connection that:

    • Will be less than 100 amps per phase, and/or
    • Doesn't require any network changes or alterations

How long will it take to finalise my connection?

There are many factors (some outside our control) that influence when a basic connection or alteration is completed. This prevents us from providing an accurate connection timeframe. However, the average timeframe for a basic connection or alteration (after submission of the connection application) is 4-6 weeks.

In addition to the work we undertake, your energy retailer may also need to arrange for a meter installation and final connection.

How much will my connection/alteration cost?

View our basic connection and alteration fees and descriptions here.

Will I need to pay a deposit?

    No deposit is required.

What information do I need to know before starting my application?

    • The distance from our existing electricity supply to your proposed connection (in metres)
    • How much of this distance is on your property, public roads or neighbouring properties (in metres)
    • How much of this distance is underground or overhead (in metres)
    • The pole identification number you connect to or propose to connect to
    • Will the line be crossing a neighbour’s property? If yes, are they likely to grant an easement? Have you discussed the easement with your neighbour?
    • Total proposed connection demand (in amps)
    • Existing demand (for existing connections) (in amps)
    • Number of phases (1, 2 or 3)
    • Estimated annual consumption
    • Maximum motor starting load (in amps)
    • Total air conditioning/heat pump loading, input load only (in kW)
    • Site sketch and demand assessment
  • Negotiated connections

Apply for this if you require a new power connection or need to upgrade or relocate your existing connection that:

    • Will be over 100 amps or
    • Requires network changes in order to support your new connection/alteration

A negotiated connection or alteration is also required when our standard basic connection types aren't suitable and we’ll need to investigate further to determine the work required to complete the work.

How long will it take to get connected?

Given negotiated connections or alterations require a design and construction period, the timeframe to complete this connection is longer compared to a basic connection or alteration.

There are many factors (some outside our control) that influence when a basic connection or alteration is completed. This prevents us from providing an accurate connection timeframe. However, the average timeframe for a negotiated connection (after submission of the connection application) is 4-6 months.

In addition to the work we undertake, your energy retailer may also need to arrange for a meter installation and final connection.

How much will my connection/alteration cost?

You’ll be provided you with a quote (called a letter of offer) after we’ve completed our network assessment and design.

Will I need to pay a deposit?

Yes. In most cases a design deposit of $500 (including GST) will be required before we process your application and begin our investigation. For larger projects (over 100 amps) you’ll be asked to pay an non-refundable application fee of $2,512.92 or more.

Please note: The design deposit is deducted from your contribution within our letter of offer. If you don’t proceed with the offer to connect, your deposit won’t be refunded and any additional costs incurred by us associated with preparing your negotiated connection offer will be invoiced to you.
