- As an Electrical Apprentice, you'll gain hands-on experience constructing, maintaining and repairing the underground electricity distribution network that supplies power to homes, businesses and communities across Tasmania.

- Distribution lineworkers maintain and upgrade the poles and wires that power homes and businesses across Tasmania.

What apprenticeships are available at TasNetworks?
TasNetworks offers apprenticeships in the Distribution Lineworker, Transmission Lineworker and Electrical Technician trades.
Our apprenticeships provide hands-on training, industry experience and a nationally recognised qualification while earning a wage.
Throughout your apprenticeship, you'll learn from experienced tradespeople, work outdoors amongst Tasmania’s wild landscapes, and play an important role in helping keep the state's electricity network safe and reliable.

What's the difference between a Distribution Lineworker and a Transmission Lineworker?
A Distribution Lineworker is responsible for the local electricity network that delivers power to homes, businesses and communities. This includes overhead powerlines, transformers, substations and public lighting.
A Transmission Lineworker is responsible for the high-voltage transmission network that transports electricity across Tasmania from sources of energy generation (hydropower, wind farms, gas power stations). This role involves working on large transmission towers, conductors and associated infrastructure, often at significant heights within teams.
Both roles offer exciting opportunities to work outdoors, develop specialist skills and contribute to Tasmania's energy future.

What qualification will I receive?
Successful apprentices will complete a nationally recognised Certificate III qualification:
- Distribution Lineworker: UET30621 Certificate III in ESI – Distribution Overhead
- Transmission Lineworker: UET30521 Certificate III in ESI – Transmission Overhead
- Electrical Technician: UEE30820 Certificate III in Electrotechnology Electrician
You'll also gain a range of industry licences and certifications throughout your apprenticeship.

Do I get paid while completing my apprenticeship?
Yes. TasNetworks apprentices earn a wage while completing their training and gaining practical experience in the field.

What salary and benefits can apprentices expect?
Our Apprentices receive an above-award salary with incremental increases throughout the duration of the apprenticeship. On top of this, TasNetworks offers a number of employee benefits, including additional leave days, electricity discount, leave loading, onsite gyms and parking, health and wellbeing rebates plus many more.

How long does the apprenticeship take to complete?
TasNetworks apprenticeship program is designed to be completed over a duration of four years (48 months).
During this time, you'll undertake a combination of classroom-based learning, practical training and on-the-job experience to develop the skills and competencies required to become a qualified tradesperson.

Who can apply for a TasNetworks apprenticeship?
To apply, you'll need to:
- Be an Australian citizen or permanent resident
- Be at least 17 years old at the time of application
- Hold a Provisional Driver's Licence, or be able to obtain one before starting.
You'll also need to meet at least one of the following requirements:
- Have completed Year 12, including passes in Maths and English (Science is desirable)
- Have completed pre-vocational studies such as a Certificate II in Electrotechnology (or equivalent)
- Have relevant work experience.

Can I apply if I am already partway through another apprenticeship?
Yes, you are still eligible to apply for a TasNetworks apprenticeship. If you are successful, you must resign from your current employer and transfer your existing qualification to TasNetworks under a new training contract.

Do I need previous electrical experience?
No. While previous study or experience can be beneficial, it's not essential. We're looking for people who are motivated to learn, have a strong commitment to safety, enjoy practical work and are interested in building a long-term career in the energy industry.

Where will I complete my training for Distribution and Transmission?
Most off-job training is delivered through TasNetworks' Registered Training Organisation(RTO 1128) at our purpose-built Training Centre in Mornington Tasmania.
You'll also have opportunity to complete practical learning and assessments in the field alongside experienced tradespeople across Tasmania.

Where will I complete my training for Electrotechnology?
You're off-job training will be delivered through TasTAFE (RTO 60142) at either Hobart, Launceston or Burnie, depending on your location and training schedule. Training is completed through structured block release periods throughout your apprenticeship.
You will also participate in residential placement blocks, where you'll be hosted by other businesses to gain exposure to a broader range of electrical work and develop the skills required to successfully complete your qualification.

Where will I be based during my apprenticeship?
Apprenticeships are on offer across the North, North-West and South, based at depots including Huonville, New Norfolk, Cambridge, Burnie, Devonport, and Rocherlea.
Your employment offer with TasNetworks will highlight the region that you will be based during your apprenticeship.

Will I need to travel during my apprenticeship?
Depending on where you're based and your training requirements, you may need to travel to attend training or gain experience in different work areas. If travel is required for training, TasNetworks will arrange and cover approved travel and accommodation expenses in line with company policy.

What support will I receive as an apprentice?
You'll be supported throughout your apprenticeship by a dedicated team, including:
- A Team Leader who provides workplace support and supervision
- An Early Careers Specialist who helps monitor your progress and wellbeing
- A mentor who provides advice and practical coaching in the field
This support network is designed to help you succeed both personally and professionally throughout your apprenticeship journey.

What does the recruitment process involve?
The recruitment process includes several stages:

What happens at the Assessment Centre?
The Assessment Centre gives you the opportunity to learn more about the apprenticeship and meet members of the TasNetworks team.
Activities may include:
- A behavioural interview
- Team-based activities
- Safety-focused activities
- A transmission tower climb (Transmission Apprentices)
- Ladder climb, harness preparation, tool handling (Distribution Apprentices)
You'll also have the chance to ask questions and learn more about life as a TasNetworks apprentice.

Do I need to be comfortable working at heights?
Yes.
Both apprenticeship streams involve working at heights as part of normal duties, although the type of work differs between roles.
Candidates should be comfortable working safely above ground level and willing to undertake training related to working at heights.

Yes, you can absolutely choose which stream you prefer and apply to the relevant opportunity when applications open.

What are the working hours for apprentices?
Ordinary hours of work are 37.5 hours per week
TasNetworks offers a 9-day fortnight, allowing employees to accrue time and take a Rostered Day Off (RDO) every second week, providing greater flexibility and work/life balance.

Will I be offered ongoing employment after I complete my apprenticeship?
Our apprentices are employed in a permanent capacity with opportunities within the region upon completion of the apprenticeship.

What tools, equipment and PPE are provided?
TasNetworks provides apprentices with the tools, equipment and personal protective equipment (PPE) required to safely perform their role. This includes specialised tools, protective arc rated clothing and safety equipment that meet industry and workplace standards.
