Low Carbon Distributed Network Trials

Tasmania’s energy system is transforming as new technologies emerge, and our community’s needs continue to grow and change.

About the project

To proactively meet the evolving demands of Tasmania’s energy system and our community's changing needs, we're always seeking innovative ways to provide safe, reliable, and cleaner energy to our customers. That's why we're looking to run three low-carbon energy system trials in regional areas of our electricity grid.

By using cutting-edge technologies in these trials, we aim to bring real benefits to our customers: more reliable power, fewer outages, and a smarter, more sustainable energy future.

The three trial use cases are:

  • Reliability

A local energy supply that will be drawn upon when there would otherwise be an outage in a particular area of the network.

  • Standalone Power System

A local energy supply that will be used to supply the entire electrical load of a selected area.

  • Resilience

A local and mobile energy supply that can be used to support the community and emergency services should a disaster threaten or disconnect the network.

What we're doing

To get the most value from these trials for Tasmanians, we’re starting a two-stage open and competitive procurement process to find the right parties to deliver them.

First, we’ll run an Expression of Interest (EOI) to shortlist the best technologies and project partners. Then, we’ll move to a Request for Proposal (RFP) to confirm the finalised solutions and secure our preferred providers.

If your organisation is a good fit, visit https://portal.tenderlink.com/tasnetworks and search for TASNET-133020 or Low Carbon Distribution Network Trials to learn more and get involved.

Expression of Interest close on 25 July 2025.
