Transporting high loads

When you transport high loads, be aware the Tasmanian transit envelope (the space you can safely occupy without contacting powerlines) is 4.6 metres from the ground to the top of the load. This includes the cab, lights, aerial or exhausts (whichever is highest) and applies to all main roads.

Plant and machinery not physically capable of extending outside the transit envelope are exempt – such as street sweepers, rollers, skid steers, garbage trucks and vacuum trucks.

Remember, the height of some of our assets may vary when located on areas where plant and vehicles would not normally travel (such as paddocks, easements and through forested areas). Our assets may be lower than the standard and consequently, the transit envelope may also be less than 4.6 metres. Always operate with caution in these areas.

Next steps

If you plan on transporting a high load,

  1. Submit an Oversize Overmass Permit through the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR)
  2. Forward a copy of your application to us, transport.permits@tasnetworks.com.au
  3. We'll perform a route survey to determine whether your travel will or will not require an escourt. (Allow 2-4 weeks)
