Electric vehicles
As technology improves and charging infrastructure expands, Electric Vehicles (EV) are becoming more accessible for individuals, businesses, and fleets across Tasmania.
Supporting Electric Vehicles in Tasmania
More Tasmanians are choosing electric cars, and new charging stations are being built to support them.
TasNetworks is helping by working with councils, businesses, government, and charging companies to connect new charging stations to our network.
We are also finding smarter ways to use our existing equipment, which helps keep electricity costs lower for everyone in Tasmania.

If you'd like to connect public EV charging infrastructure or large private chargers for your vehicle fleet, you will need to apply for a new connection. Choosing a location where there’s already enough capacity on the network can help you avoid extra costs and delays. This is usually part of the connection application process, but we’re now sharing more information about our network to help you plan and build new charging sites more easily.
Network Capacity Map
Our Network Capacity Map shows the location and estimated capacity of TasNetworks’ distribution assets across Tasmania.
This tool helps businesses, councils, and developers identify possible sites for EV chargers by showing where capacity may be available, before a connection application is submitted.
Important things to know:
- The map provides estimates only. Available capacity may change as network changes are made.
- It does not consider distance from substations, cable limits, or in-progress and new connection applications. These are assessed during the connection process and may reduce available capacity.
- This map does not replace the need for installing a data logger to confirm capacity if required. A fee will apply for this service.
- The map does not replace Before You Dig Australia or Look Up and Live safety systems, which must still be used when planning works.
How to connect to our network
Once you’ve chosen one or more possible sites for your charger, you can begin the connection process. The steps you follow will depend on the size of the connection required.
Connecting a public EV charger works much the same way as other business connections or alterations. Full details are available on our connections and alterations page.
