Be prepared, stay bright!

Most of us rely on power for everything from heating or cooking, to using the internet.

No matter the season, power outages can happen unexpectedly due to storms, fallen trees or accidents. And while our network is designed for tough conditions, severe weather can sometimes mean outages last longer than usual. Making sure your household is prepared can make all the difference!

Prepare your home emergency kit

During storm season, it's important to have these items in case you experience a prolonged power outage.

  • Battery-operated radio
  • Torches
  • Spare batteries
  • Fully charged power banks
  • First-aid kits
  • Essential medication
  • Blankets and warm clothing
  • Bottled water
  • Non-perishable food
  • + any special items for babies, elderly, vulnerable people and pets

Prepare for severe weather

Severe weather can happen quickly and have serious impacts, so it’s important to be prepared and know how to stay safe. Storms, strong winds, heavy rain and lightning can damage powerlines, cause outages, and create dangerous conditions around your home and community. By understanding the risks and taking precautions before the severe weather event happens, you can help protect yourself, your family and your property.

  • Prepare for a bushfire

Create a Bushfire Survival Plan that doesn't rely on power supply as bushfires can cause extended power outages. Prepare an emergency water supply with a generator, diesel-powered or petrol-powered pump as electric water pumps can't be used if your power supply is interrupted.

    On Total Fire Ban days

For everyone’s safety, on Total Fire Ban days we take extra precautions when operating the electricity network. These precautions include altering our processes to ensure power doesn’t automatically restore following a fault. As this process involves a physical inspection of powerlines, it may take a longer for power outages to be restored.

We understand no one likes power outages and longer restoration times may be frustrating. However, the safety of our people and our communities are our number one priority and this process is an important part of reducing the risk of fire.

  • Prepare for a storm
    • Tie down loose items around your home and garden that could become airborne during severe winds such as outdoor furniture, building materials, trampolines and other play equipment.
    • Identify and prune trees that could come down in a storm. Don’t attempt to trim trees near powerlines yourself.
    • Keep your house weatherproof. Replace broken roof tiles, keep gutters clean and fix leaks to ensure water cannot access electrical systems or appliances.
    • Know the location of your meter box and mains switches and make sure these are protected from water damage.
  • Prepare for a flood

Where possible lift all electrical appliances to a safe, higher position before the flood. If you have adequate flood warning, contact us on 132 004 to have your supply disconnected. beforehand. Please call as early as possible to allow time for us to respond. If your supply hasn't been disconnected, turn off all switches and main switches before the flood.

Frequently asked questions

  • Why are planned power outages necessary?

TasNetworks’ primary role is to provide a safe and reliable electricity network to the Tasmanian community. In doing so, we may sometimes need to turn off the power for maintenance and upgrades to keep the network running smoothly. Whenever planned outages are scheduled, you can expect that we’ll give you at least 4 business day’s notice of the planned outage date and time.

  • Why was my planned power outage cancelled?

We may have to cancel planned power outages due to unexpected events, such as severe weather.

We try to let our customers know as soon as possible of any cancelled planned power outages. However, when planned power outages are cancelled due to severe weather and other network emergencies we can't always get this message out in time.
