Solving solar export problems
Has your solar export stopped?
Normally, the electricity generated by your solar system is converted by your inverter and used by your appliances. Excess electricity is then fed back into the grid.
If you received this SMS from us then we’ve noticed your solar system hasn’t exported electricity to the grid for a few days.
This can happen for a range of reasons. In most cases, it’s something your solar installer or electrician can help with.
Quick checks you can do
Before calling your solar installer or electrician for help, try these simple steps:
Check your switches
Make sure your solar and inverter switches are turned on. If you have had electrical work done recently, check that your solar system has been switched back on.
Look at your inverter display
If lights or error codes are showing, note them down. If your system appears to be switched on, lack of export could be caused by faulty internal connections or equipment, such as a defective inverter.
Consider recent changes in electricity use
Have you been using more daytime power (e.g. heaters, air-conditioner, pool pump)? You may be using more electricity during the day than your solar system is generating.
Check the weather and shading
Cloudy days or new shade from trees or buildings can reduce export. You can review recent weather patterns. Wait for a sunny period to see if your solar export improves.
Check your system age
Older panels and inverters can lose efficiency over time.
Next steps
If your system still isn’t exporting after these checks, please contact your solar installer or a licensed electrician. They can safely inspect your system and carry out any repairs or maintenance.
You may also be able to monitor solar generation using your retailer or solar providers digital platforms.
